Visit your Doctor

Most of the countries in Africa are still being developed which means that medical and healthcare facilities might not be the same as what you would get in the United States. As a precautionary measure, you might want to visit your doctor and have him administer any necessary vaccination before you leave. If you are on medication, you might want to have your doctor draw up a prescription so you can carry it with you when you travel.

Food and Water

If you are traveling anywhere in Africa, it is always safe to drink bottled water. The water in most places might not be suitable for drinking, and it is best to stay safe and only drink bottled water. There are several restaurants where you can enjoy local food, but it might be best to avoid food sold on the street.

Foreign Exchange

Instead of carrying travelers checks or cash, you might want to speak to your bank and check how much they charge for international withdrawals and avail yourself of one of the prepaid debit cards. Most banks have prepaid debit cards that you can top up with a particular amount. Using these cards are safer than carrying cash around.

David Justin Miller recommends keeping copies of your passport and other important travel documents with you when you travel to any international destination.
